Boiler Replacement

The ECO4 programme in the UK aims to address the challenges faced by households in replacing inefficient boilers due to the rising cost of living. Here are the key points about who can replace their boiler under ECO4 and what the programme offers:

Boiler Replacement under ECO4

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Financial Need: Many households find it financially challenging to replace their boilers, which are essential for heating homes effectively.
  • ECO4 Limitations: The programme limits boiler installations to 5,000 units and imposes regulations on the types of boilers eligible. Previously, about 134,000 boilers were installed under ECO3.
  • Priority for Inefficient Boilers: ECO4 prioritizes replacing inefficient non-condensing boilers with more energy-efficient models.

Programme Details:

  • ECO4 Objectives: Launched in 2022 and running until 2026, ECO4 aims to:
    • Enhance energy efficiency in nearly 500,000 UK homes.
    • Address the fuel crisis and reduce energy costs for households.

Eligibility Standards:

  • Qualifying Benefits: Eligibility criteria include receiving qualifying benefits such as housing benefits or qualifying through the LA Flex programme.
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): An EPC rating evaluates a home’s energy needs and costs, providing recommendations for energy reduction.

Installation Process:

  • Assessment: Once eligibility is confirmed, a free home assessment will be scheduled to recommend effective energy-saving measures.
  • Installation: Skilled heating engineers will install the recommended energy efficiency measures at a convenient time for the homeowner. Boiler installations are conducted by fully certified Gas Safe heating professionals.

Programme Backing:

  • Energy Suppliers: ECO4 is supported by large and medium energy suppliers obligated under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. Companies such as British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Scottish Power, and Octopus Energy are involved.
